SSC CHSL Exam Pattern, Papers & Books

August 23, 2011

SSC CHSL Exam Prep Material
This blog post is a sequel to an earlier blog article titled: SSC CHSL Exam 2012 Notification, Eligibility & Forms for DEO & LDC. While that article told you about SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam) notification and how to apply for this exam, this blog post tells you how to prepare for the CHSL exam by pointing you to the sources of exam papers & prep books.

Let us begin that with a discussion on the CHSL exam pattern.

CHSL exam pattern:
CHSL exam is conducted for selecting Data Entry Operators (DEO) & Lower Division Clerks (LDC) for various central Govt. organizations in India. The selection process consists of a written exam followed by skill tests. The merit is based on the marks secured in the written exam and the skill test is of qualifying nature only.
SSC CHSL Exam Pattern

The CHSL written exam is a two hour long, 200 mark objective type (i.e. Multiple choice) question exam in which there are four test sections. You can find the section-wise distribution of marks along with number of questions as given at right.

Beware! There is negative marking in CHSL exam – so make your guess answers wisely.

Skill test for Data Entry Operators in CHSL:
In the DEO skill test, you would be given printed passage in English containing 2000-2200 strokes/key-depressions which you have to enter in the computer within 15 minutes. You would be judged based on how many correct entries of the key depressions you made.
As said, this is of qualifying nature only – you just have to reach the threshold level of 8,000 Key Depressions per hour i.e. in 15 minutes, you have to make 2,000 correct key depressions.

Typing Test for LDCs in CHSL:
It is almost similar to above – but here you can take the test either in Hindi or in English. In the typing test for LDCs in CHSL, you would be given a text passage, which you have to enter correctly in 10 minutes. The speed will be judged based on how many words you could correctly type on the computer.
This again is qualifying nature only – you just have to reach the threshold level of:
1.0) If you take the test in English: 35 words per minute (10500 key depressions/hour).
2.0) If you take the test in Hindi: 30 words per minute (9000 key depressions/hour).

SC CHSL Exam Sample Papers:
I had tried hard in locating at least one good website offering Sample/Previous years exam paper of SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam but failed to locate any. In absence of any reliable online CHSL exam paper, I would advise you to go through the following book:
List Price: Rs. 160; Offer Price:Rs. 144, Discount: Rs. 16 (10%)
Above book gives you 10 test papers & 2 model papers of SSC LDC/DEO exam.

Prep Books for SC CHSL Exam:
SSC CHSL Exam Prep Book
In absence of any reliable preparation/study material for CHSL exam, you have to depend on books only. You can find any of the following books from any good book stores or order them online from flipkart, which gives you huge discounts, free-shipping as well as Cash-On-Delivery facilities:

List Price: Rs. 295; Offer Price: Rs. 266; Discount: Rs. 29 (10%)

List Price: Rs. 270; Offer Price: Rs. 230; Discount: Rs. 40 (15%)

Above are the SSC CHSL exam guide books which covers all test section and hence you can use them for short-time preparation. But if you have time and would like to go for some serious study, you can go through following books, which would help you prepare for individual test sections of CHSL exam:
List Price: Rs. 200; Offer Price:Rs. 170; Discount: Rs. 30 (15%)

List Price: Rs. 340; Offer Price:Rs. 238; Discount: Rs. 102 (30%)

Numerical Ability & Quantitative Aptitude by P. K. Mittal Publisher: Galgotia
List Price: Rs. 425; Offer Price:Rs. 383; Discount: Rs. 42 (10%)

List Price: Rs. 260; Offer Price: Rs. 208; Discount: Rs. 52 (20%)

Test material for SSC CHSL Skill Test:
Once you clear the SSC written exam, you have to appear in the skill test of Data Entry Operators (DEO) & Lower Division Clerks (LDC). How do you test yourself for these typing/data entry skills ? How to improve upon your data entry skill?

To answer these questions, I had posted following two exclusive blog post for typing/data entry skill test:
Data Entry Operators Skill Test: It introduces you to the skill test.
Test Your Data Entry Skill Online/Download software: It points you to those resources which helps you test yourself.

Hope with above exam prep material you can appear confidently for the SSC CHSL exam. My best wishes! I would look for more study materials - the same papers & books for this exam and post them here when I find them. So keep visiting this blog..

CAT 2011 Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Cut-offs

August 08, 2011

CAT 2011 Exam Pattern Syllabus Cut-offs
This blog post of mine follows an earlier blog article titled: CAT 2011 Exam Dates, Eligibility & Form which tells you about how to apply for CAT (Common Admission Test). As promised on that blog article, I am putting below the pattern of CAT 2011 (yes, there is some change in CAT pattern compared to CAT 2010) as well as the syllabus of CAT. This blog post also tells you what are the CAT cut-offs, so that you have an approximate idea about how much to score in CAT to get admissions in the famed IIMs.

Without wasting time further, let us find what is the pattern of CAT exam.

CAT 2011 pattern - changes in test sections:
CAT 2011 Exam Pattern
CAT 2011 is going to have only two sections, instead of three previously. Each of the two sections would have 30 questions to be answered in 70 minutes - thus 60 questions to be answered in 140 minutes in total which gives you 2 minute 20 second to answer each question. Section-wise CAT 2011 test sections along with duration is given above. Each of the question has 3 marks. But beware! there is negative marking in CAT - minus 1 for each wrong answer!

On the other hand CAT 2010 had following three sections:
1.0 Verbal Aptitude (called as VA).
2.0 Quantitative Aptitude (called as QA)
3.0 Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (called as DI/LR)
Each sections had 20 questions - thus 60 questions to be answered in 135 minutes.

So what has changed in the pattern of CAT 2011 compared to CAT 2010?
Compared to CAT 2010, you have 5 minutes extra time. And you have two sections now instead of three previously. But than, if you see the content of the test in totality, much has not changed - QA & DI has been clubbed to give you the Section-1 of CAT 2011 while VA & LR has been clubbed to give you the Section-2. Thus if you are already making your preparation based on CAT 2010, nothing to fear about!

CAT - more accuracy based than time based test:
Over the years, number of questions asked in CAT has varied from as high as 150 in CAT 2003 to as low as 60 in CAT 2009 onwards. You can see the number of questions asked in each test section since from CAT 2003 in the table below:
CAT Exam pattern
As you can see the exam trend from CAT 2003 TO CAT 2010 and now CAT 2011, the total numbers of questions have been reduced – CAT is thus a more accuracy-based test now than a speed-based test. You are given sufficient time to answer the question correctly.

CAT 2011 test centres and CAT exam environment:
So you have to answer these 60 questions to bell the CAT – but where do you appear in this exam?

From CAT 2009 onwards, CAT has become a Computer Based Test (CBT) – it is not a paper-pencil test anymore. You have to appear the exam in the designated CAT test sites within the 36 cities/towns, list of which is given in this webpage.

Most of them are located in Engineering/Management colleges, with a few of them in schools too. All these test centers would have sufficient number of computers, being connected to a central server which would have the CAT questions. Thus, CAT exam would be a Computer Based Test (CBT) and not an Internet Based Test (IBT). You can not appear in the CAT exam from say a cyber cafe, but have to appear in the computers in the test centers only!

You can choose any date within the CAT test window period (i.e. 22nd October to 18th November 2011) and any of the two time slots (10 AM and 3:15 PM) while registering for CAT.

Let us suppose you had applied for CAT and now you are in the CAT test site, sitting in front of the computer where you are going to take the exam. What are you going to see when the test starts? How does a CAT CBT look like? You can find an actual CAT test environment from this demo CAT, provided by Prometric who is conducting the exam on behalf of IIMs.

This demo CAT gives you an actual user experience, where you can get to know the test screens with the function of buttons – “Next”, “Mark, “Review”, Familiarity of these CAT test screens is going to help you a lot while taking the actual exam.

CAT 2011 Syllabus:
IIMs do not prescribe any syllabus for CAT – it merely states that “The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities”.

So in absence of an official CAT syllabus how do you prepare for the exam? You can do this by finding what sorts of questions are asked in each of the three sections of CAT. Following is a test section-wise compilation of the type of questions asked in CAT.

CAT Syllabus for Verbal Aptitude section:
English usage: Inappropriate Usage, Contextual meaning, Para jumbles, Sentence completion, Sentence correction, Fill in the Blanks, Verbal Reasoning, Paragraph Completion.
Reading Comprehension:Politics, History & Mythology, Sociology and Linguistics, Fiction / Non-fiction, Philosophy & Law, Art & Culture.

CAT Syllabus for Quantitative Aptitude section:
Arithmetic: Number system, Percentage, SI-CI, PLD, Averages, Ratio proportion, Speed Time Distance, Work.
Algebra: Equations & Inequalities, Functions & graphs, Maxima minima, Series, sequences & progressions & logs.
Geometry: Plane geometry (Lines, angles, Triangles, Spheres, Rectangles, Cube, Cone etc), Mensuration, Co-ordinate geometry, Trigonometry.

CAT Syllabus for Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section:

BHEL ET Exam Pattern, Sample Papers & Books

August 02, 2011

BHEL ET Exam Sample Papers
This blog post follows my earlier article on BHEL ET Recruitment 2011-2012: Notification, Eligibility & Forms which tells you about the recent BHEL job notification for Engineer Trainees along with the eligibilities and how to apply for the same. The focus of this blog post is on how to prepare for the BHEL Engineer Trainee Exam, by giving you the details of the Exam pattern and than pointing you to the study materials – sample papers and books for BHEL Engineer Trainee Exam.

BHEL Engineer Trainee Exam Pattern:
The selection process of BHEL for Engineer Trainee consists of a written test, followed by a personal interview. Following the written test, almost 1800 candidates are supposed to be called and one out of every three of them is expected to get the BHEL JOB!

What is the pattern of BHEL written test? Well, the exam consists of 240 Objective questions, each of 1 mark, to be answered in 2-n-half hour – you thus have just over 35 seconds to answer each question. Speed is therefore a criteria in doing well in the BHEL written test.
But at the same time, you need to be accurate as well in answering these BHEL questions correctly – as there are 0.2 negative marks for each wrong answer!

There are two sections in BHEL written test:
1.0 Aptitude Test: Consists of questions from the areas of Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, Logical thinking, English usage & General Awareness.
2.0 Technical test: Consists of two parts: General engineering questions & questions specific to your engineering discipline.
Although BHEL notification has not specified anything about how many questions would be set in each section, data from previous exams shows that 120 questions are set in each of these two sections.

Is there any syllabus for BHEL written test?
No. BHEL has not prescribed any syllabus for the written test. However as per feedback from previous exams, for the BHEL Technical test, you can follow the syllabus for the GATE exam. Likewise however, for BHEL Aptitude test, no specific exam syllabus can be prescribed and you have to rely on the Aptitude test question pattern of other competitive exams.

How do you prepare for these tests?

BHEL Engineer Trainee Sample question papers:
Sample questions for the BHEL aptitude Test:
The first place that you should look to get an inkling of what kind of questions may be asked in the aptitude test is this BHEL written test webpage, which gives you 13 solved sample aptitude questions. Also, this candidate experience in chetanasinterview.com (scroll down to the “General Aptitude” section) gives you some insights to the BHEL aptitude test questions.

But to prepare for these questions thoroughly, you need to prepare selectively for each section (i.e. Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, Logical thinking, English usage & General Awareness). I find that these test areas are very similar to the ones asked in Bank PO exam and therefore, the sample aptitude question papers given in this blog post should definitely help you prepare for the BHEL Aptitude paper.

Sample questions for the BHEL Technical Test:
The BHEL written test webpage again gives you a few solved sample questions from both the test areas of General engineering as well as Specific engineering disciplines.
